Experience the Spirit of Aloha at the 34th Annual Santa Cruz Wharf Outrigger Races

SANTA CRUZ, CA. Registration is open for one of Santa Cruz's most colorful waterfront traditions. Early bird discount registration ends on August 16 for outrigger teams. The 34th Annual Aloha Outrigger Races return to the Santa Cruz Wharf on Saturday, September 19, 2026, inviting the community to experience Hawaiian culture through outrigger canoe racing, live hula performances, and family-friendly fun.

Hosted by the City of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department and Pu Pu 'O Hawaii Outrigger Club, the event welcomes paddlers of all experience levels. Teams of four alongside experienced outrigger paddlers, making it easy for first-time participants to learn the sport while enjoying an unforgettable day on the water.

"The Aloha Outrigger Races bring people together through community, teamwork, and the spirit of Aloha," said Tony Elliot, Director of Parks & Recreation. "Whether you're racing or cheering from the Wharf, everyone is invited to experience this fun and one-of-a-kind Santa Cruz tradition."

Admission is free for spectators, who are encouraged to wear their favorite Hawaiian gear. In addition to exciting outrigger races, the public can enjoy live hula performances and the festive atmosphere of the Santa Cruz Wharf throughout the day.

Outrigger teams are encouraged to embrace the spirit of aloha by wearing themed costumes, decorating their canoes, and showing off their creativity. In addition to race awards, the popular Aloha Spirit Award recognizes the team that best exemplifies teamwork, sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and aloha. The winning team will receive a $100 Jack O'Neill Restaurant & Lounge gift card, generously donated by the Dream Inn, along with individual goodie baskets.

Early bird registration is $120 per team end on August 16, increasing to $150 per team through September 4. Registration includes four event T-shirts and special offers from participating Wharf businesses.

Hula Performance Schedule

• Kūhai Hālau O Mehanakealohakalaua'eikapoli Pā ʻŌlapa Kahiko: 11:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
• Te Hau Nui School of Hula and Tahitian Dance: 1:30–2:00 p.m.
