City Parks and Rec Announces Winter-Spring Scholarship Awards, Providing Over $20,000 in Youth Program Access

SANTA CRUZ, CA — The City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the Friends of Parks and Recreation (FOPAR), is proud to announce the award of $20,688 in scholarships for the Winter-Spring 2026 season. These awards will allow 55 local children to participate in essential recreation programs, after-school activities, and seasonal camps that foster growth and well-being.

As part of the Department’s ongoing commitment to equity and community health, these scholarships ensure that financial barriers do not prevent Santa Cruz’s most vulnerable residents from accessing high-quality programming. This season, the demand for support was significant, with over $31,000 in assistance requested by local families.

“Our parks and programs are the heart of a thriving Santa Cruz, but they only fulfill their mission if they are accessible to everyone,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tony Elliot. “By leveraging incredible community support, we are ensuring that dozens of children can engage in activities that build confidence, health, and a sense of belonging.”

The scholarship fund is a collaborative effort fueled by the generosity of community donors and key benefactors, including the City Children’s Fund and Omega Nu. This cycle, 75% of the awardees are Medi-Cal qualified, highlighting the critical role these funds play in supporting families with the greatest need.

A Call for Continued Community Stewardship

While we are celebrating 55 children heading into a season of growth, the community’s request for support reached over $31,000. Our goal is to grow the Youth Scholarship Access Fund to meet that full $10,000 gap so that every eligible child in Santa Cruz can find their path to play.

“We are stewards of our children’s future,” said the Board of Friends of Parks and Rec. “When you donate to the scholarship fund, you aren’t just paying for a class; you are investing in a child’s health and well-being.”

Members of the public can make a tax-deductible donation to the scholarship fund by visiting https://friendsofparksandrec.org/product/scholarships/. Every dollar contributed goes directly toward ensuring no child is left on the sidelines.
