With hot temperatures expected this weekend and large crowds anticipated at local beaches, regional public safety agencies are asking media partners and the community to help amplify a timely ocean safety message.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office, Santa Cruz County OR3, CAL FIRE, UCSC, and the City of Santa Cruz are coordinating beach safety outreach efforts, including deploying electronic message boards.
Beach Safety Reminders:
Never turn your back on the ocean.
Be aware of sneaker waves and changing surf conditions.
Obey all posted signs, flags and official warnings
Understand how to recognize and respond to rip currents.
Keep children within arm's reach near the water.
Swim near staffed lifeguard towers whenever possible.
Avoid climbing on rocks, jetties, and driftwood near the surf zone.
Weather and Beach Conditions
The National Weather Service forecasts elevated temperatures throughout Santa Cruz County, with highs in the 80s along the coast and low to mid-90s in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
In addition, a long-period southerly swell is creating an increased risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents. A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through 9:00 p.m. June 11th, with additional long-period swells expected through the weekend.
