Purpose and Functions
The Public Works Operations Division is responsible for the management of major field operations divisions within the Public Works Department, including street and sidewalk maintenance, flood control, fleet maintenance, radio communications and facility maintenance.
Street and Sidewalk Maintenance
Maintains the City’s street surfaces, curbs, gutters, and storm drainage systems. May construct minor street projects and install water and sewer utility trench resurfacing. Responsible for the repair of hazardous publicly-owned sidewalks, curbs and gutters in the City to reduce liability and protect the public.
Traffic Maintenance
Installs and maintains traffic painting, signing, and traffic calming devices. Maintains the City's painted curbs and crosswalks. Responsible for all City street signage and for the operation and maintenance of almost 2,000 metal pole City-owned streetlights and 41 City-owned traffic signals.
Fleet Maintenance
Maintains, services and repairs all City vehicles and equipment units and manages the fleet database. Manages and operates the fueling facilities used by most of the fleet, and the City’s equipment pool. This division plans, coordinates and manages radio communications systems. Responsibilities include administration of the equipment maintenance contract, reassignment of equipment from one department to another and review of the compatibility of new radio purchases with existing systems in the City.
Facilities Maintenance
Maintains City-owned buildings and structures in good working order and in compliance with all mandated guidelines using environmentally friendly products. Our goal is to provide all City Departments with quick and efficient service, enabling them to work in a safe and comfortable atmosphere. This activity also manages the City's Corporation Yard.
