New Utility Customer Portal

Sample utility bill

Overview

The City of Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz Municipal Utilities (SCMU) are excited to offer a new Utility Customer Portal.

The online self-registration process is now available. With this new portal you are able to pay SCMU utility bills, check your water use, and make service requests all in one place.

We appreciate your patience as we transitioned to the new system.

What to expect:

  • Your October bill will look different, and you will have a new account number.
  • You are no longer able to pay utility bills using MyCity of Santa Cruz and access water use information in WaterSmart.
  • Bill delivery preferences have been reset to paper – Expect your October Bill to arrive in the mail.
  • Any automatic payments scheduled after September 30th, 2026 have been cancelled.

Protect Yourself from Utility Scams

SCMU is currently setting up a new Utility Customer Portal. We will keep this page updated with information.

In the meantime, make sure to be aware of common Utility Scams and protect yourself. Here are a few things to watch out for:

  • SCMU will never ask for your social security number.
  • SCMU will never ask for payment via gift card or prepaid cash card.
  • You can verify you are speaking to SCMU staff by calling our Customer Service Team at 831-420-5220 or sending us an e-mail at scmu@santacruzca.gov.

Note: If you suspect fraud, contact your credit card company or bank directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who does this effect?

This new Utility Customer Portal system will affect all SCMU account-holding customers in one way or another. Bills will look a little different but contain all the same information. You will also have a new account number. Customers who prefer to pay online or check their water use online will need to create a new online portal account. Customers who use autopay will need to re-schedule their autopay after creating a new account.

Will I need to make a new account?

If you are currently an SCMU account holder your account information will be transferred to the new system. However, once the portal is available, SCMU accountholders will need to register for the new online portal to access online bill pay and set up leak alerts.

How do I register for the new portal

Visit utilities.santacruzca.gov and click on the Sign Up button to register for the new portal. You will need your new account number and most recent bill balance. If you have not yet received a bill with your new account number, you can use the “Find My Account Number” look-up tool on the main portal page. For assistance registering, please call Santa Cruz Municipal Utilities at (831) 420-5220.

Will I need to re-schedule my autopay?

Yes. SCMU accountholders will need to create a new online portal account and re-schedule any automatic payments. Your previous autopay settings did not transfer over to the new system. Any automatic payments scheduled after September 30th have been cancelled.

Why couldn’t my payment info and preferences be transferred to the new system?

Financial information is sensitive and needs to be protected, and we take that seriously. Asking customers to re-enter their payment preferences rather than transferring them is the safest way to handle this information. We acknowledge that this is an inconvenience, and thank you for your patience as we work through this transition.

Do I have to use the new utility online portal?

No. Customers are not required to use the new portal and can continue to conduct business with SCMU over the phone, by mail, and in person. Staff are available by phone Monday through Friday, 8:30am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-3:30pm. Our lobby is also open Monday through Friday 9:00am-11:00am and 1:00pm-3:00pm for in-person assistance.

For customers that don’t want to pay online, the following options are still available:

  • Mailing a check
  • Paying in person with cash, check, or card
  • Calling us to make a payment over the phone using our automated phone payment system
  • Setting up automatic payment through your bank (contact your bank to find out if this is a service that they offer)

I have limited/no access to a computer or mobile device. How can I register for the new portal?

Customers that need access to, or support for, a computer to sign up can visit the Santa Cruz Public Library to use publicly accessible computers. Drop-ins are welcome, but appointments are recommended to ensure staff are available to assist you if needed. Call the Library at 831-427-7713 for more information.
